Freelance fintech copywriter

Blog

So you're looking to hire a fintech copywriter and you've landed on this blog post.

Allow me to pat myself on the back for my SEO prowess.

Right. Sorry… I need to stretch a wee bit to reach my back, and I've never been the most flexible guy.

OK. Done.

But, joking aside, gaming the Google gods isn't the reason why I've written a blog post with a suspiciously 2006 SEO vibe.

OK. OK. So maybe it partly is.

But I'm also hoping to give you an overview of why, if your fintech needs help with web copy, blog posts, or other marketing literature, I might be a good fit.

Sounds good?

I promise I'll keep it brief.

What is fintech copywriting?

Well, it's no different than any other type of copywriting, really. Copywriting — regardless of the industry — is writing to sell. It just so happens that, in fintech copywriting, what you're selling is a digital-first financial services product.

But while the ultimate goal — persuading customers to sign up / book a demo / part with their money in exchange for what you're selling — is the same in fintech copywriting as it is in other types of copywriting, (and a fintech copywriter will use the same techniques copywriters in other niches use), writing for fintech has two important peculiarities.

First, the subject matter, particularly in the B2B space, can get quite technical. The fintech industry also has its own unique terminology, some of which can feel quite alien to a person who doesn't use it on the daily.

Second, because fintech is a highly regulated industry, you need to tread carefully. Claims or statements that are perfectly acceptable when you're writing copy for, say, a lifestyle brand, or the healthcare niche might get you in hot water when you're writing in fintech.

These two peculiarities are why you can benefit from hiring an expert fintech copywriter:

It saves time and effort

While any copywriter worth their salt can get to grips with the technicalities of — and the terminology associated with — a fintech product or service, it may take them longer to do this if they don't specialise in fintech.

A fintech copywriter, on the other hand, will already be familiar with them. And this higher level of assumed knowledge means you'll need to spend less time briefing them.

It can give your copy an edge

Because a specialist writes about fintech topics day in day out, they'll be familiar with current thinking, trends, and research on the subject.

This means they can hit the ground running. And, even better, they can give you strategic advice based on their knowledge of what's being done (and what's working for other businesses) in your niche.

Quicker approvals

While it's rare for anyone to get it right the first time — copywriting is a collaboration, and drafts invariably need tweaks — a specialist's first draft may be closer to the mark.

In particular, fintech copywriters may have a better feel for what legal and compliance might find objectionable, so they can approach the copy in a way that preempts any issues.

Why hire me as your fintech copywriter?

There are thousands of copywriters in the UK alone (full disclosure: I tried googling an exact number and fell down a deep, deep rabbit hole which I'll spare you because, let's face it, it's beside the point).

So what makes little old me uniquely qualified to take on your fintech copywriting project?

I'll give you five reasons.

1. I've worked both sides of the fence

That's right. Before taking the plunge and becoming a freelance fintech copywriter, I worked for 9 years as a solicitor and compliance officer in the financial services industry, including a 5-year stint with the Maltese financial services regulator

The upshot is that I have an inside perspective into how regulators and legal and compliance teams think, so I can keep copy relevant and compelling without raising anyone's blood pressure. Or risking it being stuck in amends hell.

2. In-depth experience

Over the past 8+ years, I've worked with fintech startups, scaleups, and household names, as well as several traditional financial services businesses.

I'm especially experienced when it comes to B2B payments, banking, personal finance, UK tax laws, and asset management. But I've also written extensively about other topics, including cryptocurrencies, automation, and software-as-a-service tools.

If it's a financial services or technology topic aimed at the C-Suite or retail customers, chances are I may have a relevant sample I can show you.

3. Proven process

I'm all about the results. Because, ultimately, that's what it's all about, isn't it?

This article about the UK's 2019/20 tax bands I wrote for MileIQ outranked HMRC's page on the topic. And this landing page helped Frost go from 0 to 10,000 subscribers in 6 months.

Can I guarantee you the same results? No.

But with consistent effort and dedication, I can definitely help you improve.

More to the point, I've honed my process to make working with me as easy as effortless as possible.

I spend a lot of time understanding your requirements up front, so my first draft is as close to the mark as it can be. And I make it a point to keep you updated about the project's status and deliver on time, to the highest possible standard.

4. I'm genuinely invested in your success

No. I'm not just throwing in a meaningless platitude so there can be five items on my list. I genuinely believe your success is my success.

Think about it. When you hire me, you’re investing money in your business. If working with me helps you achieve your goals, it means your investment was worthwhile. Which, in turn, means you’ll be more likely to work with me again and recommend me to others.

5. My clients seem to like working with me (at least that's what they tell me)

'Of course he'd say he's the best thing since sliced bread,' you may be saying if you've read this far.

To which I'd counter, yes. You do have a point.

So don't take my word for it.

Here's what some of my lovely clients say about me:

'André puts his heart and soul into the work he does. A true professional — and the results of his efforts are always clearly visible in his work.'

Simon Swords, Managing Director @ Fundipedia

'The work André produced was absolutely excellent, delivered on time and the entire process felt seamless and thoroughly enjoyable. I won't hesitate to book him again... if I can find a window where he's available, as he's quite rightly in demand!!'

Natalie Moores, Co-founder @ Mac + Moore

'André is a very accomplished copywriter. No matter the topic in the financial industry, he gets it right. We have always had the best results, which are both a pleasure to read and generate leads.'

Ansgar Holtmann, former Communication & Content Manager @ Solaris
